This chapter examines the principles of database management, as they apply to GIS, and the strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches to the use of database tools. The first section examines the fundamental characteristics of the DBMS. This is followed by sections on data modelling, database design, database structures and alternative methods of utilizing a DBMS within GIS. The final section examines future developments and the ways in which they may contribute to the solution of outstanding technical and methodological problems in database management for GIS. -from Author
