    Using oxygen isotopes in zircon from Palaeoproterozoic igneous rocks from Brazil to help elucidate when modern-style subduction began on Earth.

    Key findings

    Stable oxygen isotopes along with Hf and U-Pb radiogenic isotopes measured in zircon from Palaeoproterozoic igneous rocks from the Mineiro Belt, Brazil, help to establish that the onset of modern-style plate tectonics on Earth was diachronous and took up to a billion years to establish itself.
