During these years, he participated in multidisciplinary projects, which investigated the diversity of microbial communities and their contribution to various biogeochemical processes, including bioremediation of organic contaminants, biotransformations of metals and radionuclides, and mobilisation of arsenic. He has experience with culture-based and molecular microbiology techniques, including next generation DNA sequencing and metagenomics. Thanos was a lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University (2015-2016) and at the University of Central Lancashire (2016-2019), before joining the University of Portsmouth in January 2020.
